Designed for working nurses with full-time schedules, this online MSN-FNP program delivers non-clinical courses through a convenient online platform. Clinical courses require partial online participation, plus periodic meetings with faculty that will take place on campus. The curriculum dives into key responsibilities of family nurse practitioners, allowing you to strengthen your professional skills and prepare for the next step in your career.

Applicants for the Online-FNP program who meet all published admission criteria will be invited to discuss additional program requirements including on-campus immersion experiences and clinical placements prior to receiving final acceptance decisions.

Admission Requirements

We require that applicants have completed at least one year of practice as a registered nurse.

To apply, prospective students must:

  • Complete our free online application
  • Have a baccalaureate degree in nursing from an accredited college or university program
  • Submit official transcripts from all college/universities attended
  • Demonstrate the capability to succeed in a graduate program, as evidenced by an overall undergraduate GPA of at least a 3.0 (on a 4.0 scale). Applicants with an overall GPA less than 3.0 but at least 2.7 will be considered on a case by case basis, provided that they’ve held their BSN degree for at least 5 years and have demonstrated significant professional accomplishment in the field of nursing.
  • Hold an active unencumbered licensure as a registered nurse in New York or in Ontario for Canadian students.
  • Hold a current CPR certification.
  • Demonstrate completion of required prerequisite courses on transcripts. Prerequisites include Baccalaureate-level health assessment, pathophysiology, pharmacology, and a 3-cr statistics course or equivalent,
  • Submit two letters of recommendation, with at least one letter from an advanced practice nurse (NP) or a physician attesting to clinical knowledge, skills, leadership and the ability to be a good NP candidate. Other acceptable references include supervisors, managers or a former professor.
  • Provide a written nursing philosophy statement. This statement should be 2 pages in length (double spaced, 12-point font) that summarizes your nursing philosophy, past experience, interest in pursuing the MS FNP degree, and career goals.
  • Be a NY State resident and live approximately 75 miles+ from campus to qualify for the online program
  • Submit planned preceptor contact information by October 1st (Fall Admit) or March 1st (Spring Admit)

A student who meets the entry requirements and is currently or was previously enrolled in a nurse practitioner program at another college or university must obtain a letter from that School of Nursing stating the student is in good standing, not on probation, and able to register for classes. Students who were dismissed for any reason from a graduate nursing program will not be considered for admission.
